Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a few common questions people have about somatic coaching. If you don't find what you're looking for here, please contact us. We'd love to speak with you!

Somatic coaching simply means that we will focus on your body while we work. We'll focus on identifying your bodily sensations and how your emotions related to them.

Coaching is not therapy, and coaches are not licensed therapists. Although at times the work may feel therapeutic, the method is designed to discover tools and build skills to help you regulate your nervous system, connect to emotions, and build toward your future goals.

You’ll sometimes hear it put simply as “Therapy is about the past, and coaching is about the future.” In other words, as your coach, we are focused on helping you achieve your future goals, while therapy tends to focus more on healing from your past.

While that’s true, there are a few other key differences. Consider these:

  • Therapists assess, diagnose, and treat mental illness, while your coach helps you elevate your performance to achieve your goals. If you need help with a mental health issue, please consider contacting a psychotherapy professional.
  • A coaching relationship is often for a stated time frame, while the therapist/client relationship may be remain open-ended.
  • Therapy may be covered by your health insurance plan. Coaching is not.

While we believe strongly in the value and power of coaching, we also recognize that there are times when therapy is the correct modality. Some men also pursue both therapy and coaching simultaneously and use each modality to leverage the tools from the other.
